11th annual | February 10-20, 2021
undercurrents is Ottawa’s festival of contemporary theatre, produced by the Ottawa Fringe Festival, and taking place February 10-20, 2021.
While we are uncertain of what restrictions may be in place at that time due to COVID-19, we are planning for the festival to take place in-person and digitally.
We are currently seeking submissions from Ottawa-based artists, for productions that are appropriate for a small audience (approximately 40 people), and can also follow physical distancing protocols (i.e no shows in an elevator). Pieces should run 30-80 minutes, though shorter or longer may be considered.
Applicants are also asked to include a proposal for a digital component to be presented in tandem with (or depending on circumstances, in place of) the live performance. The digital component could be a streamed performance, artist talk/Q&A, podcast or audio experience, etc. This portion of the application is meant to open up a discussion between the artist and the festival – so don’t worry if your proposal isn’t fully fleshed out or if the technological aspect intimidates you.
Please note that we will consider digital-only productions, but our preference when programming will be shows that have a live & digital audience experience.
Artists who wish to have their production considered for undercurrents 2021 are asked to submit their information no later than July 31, 2020. Applications received after this date will be considered for 2022.
Applications will be accepted via our website: undercurrentsfestival.ca/apply
In addition to the online form, we ask all artists to submit:
- A proposal describing the project, its history, the participating artists, and digital component (maximum four pages)
- Biographies/CVs of lead artists
- Detailed technical specifications for the production
- A script sample or completed script
- Additional support material (optional): reviews, photos, or letters of support
