Supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, under development is the Ottawa Fringe’s new play development program, inviting local artists/collectives to work on their new creation pieces in residence at Arts Court for a year.
under development offers rehearsal/creation space and access to professional development opportunities, workshops, and Fringe resources. Participants have the freedom to create based on their own process and timeline, with access to resources on an as needed/requested basis. under development participants meet regularly with Fringe staff and as a group for updates and to share their work.

Sarah Waisvisz – Monstrous, or, The Miscegenation Advantage
Sarah was the first under development participant, working on her first solo show, Monstrous. Sarah’s piece premiered at the 2016 undercurrents festival, and was presented again later that year as part of b current’s 14th annual rock.paper.sistahz. festival in Toronto.

Norah Paton – Burnt
Norah Paton’s Burnt originated at Fresh Meat 3 in 2014, and was subsequently featured as part of New Play Tuesday in 2016. After a year of work through under development, Burnt premiered as part of the 2017 undercurrents festival.

F&F Theatre – Forstner & Fillister Present: Forstner & Fillister in: Forstner & Fillister
F&F Theatre first presented a short iteration of their piece at Fresh Meat 3 in 2014, followed by a short run as part of the 2016 undercurrents Late Night Series. F&F Theatre joined under development in 2016, and are now in the final stages of getting Forstner & Fillister Present: Forstner & Fillister in: Forstner & Fillister ready to premiere as part of the the 2018 undercurrents festival in February.

Gabrielle Lazarovitz – Little Boxes
Little Boxes was originally formed through a collaboration between Gabrielle Lazarovitz, Brad Long, and Kevin Orr working in the Theatre 4.669 Summer Lab program. After a year of work in Arts Court through under development, Gabrielle is preparing to premiere Little Boxes as part of the 2018 undercurrents festival in February, working with director Adam Paolozza.

Matt Miwa – Bold Woman, Love!
Originally supported by the Ottawa Fringe through a 2016 Ontario Arts Council Theatre Creators’ Reserve Grant, (now called Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators) Bold Woman, Love! marks Matt’s first foray into professional playwriting and now, directing. Through under development, Matt and his team are set to explore the tricky performative and dramaturgical dimensions of Bold Woman, Love! a text best defined as a melodramatic dream play.
